Congratulations to everyone involved in “Spamalot!” What a great show! It was great getting to know so many of you better over the last couple of weeks. Pit orchestra – congratulations on a great run and thank you for your hard work, time, and dedication to the show. Thanks to everyone that came out to support our show over the last week!
Reynolds students continue to impress through not only performance, but through hard work, leadership and teamwork, and their sense of community. Bravo, all! I am so proud of all of you and proud to be your band teacher.
A big congratulations goes out to Evan Overman – one of our grade 12 trumpet players! Evan has been accepted to the Denis Wick Canadian (National) Wind Orchestra based on his audition a few weeks ago. He will join top student musicians in Toronto for a week of rehearsals and high-level music making in May. Bravo! We’re all proud of you!

3.) Band 9 & 10 Term 3 Requirements Explained
Term 3 playing “Requirements” (I hate the phrase “playing tests”) were issued to all Grade 9 and 10 students at the beginning of February. Requirements at the junior band level include scales in running and alternating thirds (performed from memory) and several studies from Belwin Progressive Band Studies (9s) and Scale Etudes (10s) method books. These scales and studies are looked at DAILY in A Block band classes.
Students have the opportunity to perform them in front of their peers in class OR perform them when I am not teaching. Students can also record their studies (memorized scales must be performed LIVE) on a phone or camera and email them to me for marking/feedback.
All scales are marked as pass or fail. Studies are marked out of 10 (1/2 mark off for wrong notes, rhythms, intonation, tone, etc). Students can re-submit or re-perform (… is that a word??) their scales and studies AS MANY TIMES AS THEY LIKE… until they get the mark they want. I will always take the highest mark. Everyone is capable of earning an A in my classes.
Please note: Things I CAN base your grade on… playing your requirements, turning in a practice card (partial practice is preferred over no practice at all), attending class and working hard in class. Things I CAN’T base your grade on… your award-winning smile, your new haircut, your “sick” dance moves, the $50 you slipped me between classes, or all the coffee-bribes you’ve brought me (but please do keep trying!) etc… 🙂
I am available for help if you need it! Requirements are DUE on Monday, April 9th.
Thanks everyone! One week to go before Spring Break! Keep working hard and practicing!
