K-12 Funding Model Changes – A Reply from the Ministry of Education

The RMPA has received a reply from the Ministry of Education to our letter about the potentially devastating impact of proposed funding-model changes on music, fine arts and other out-of-timetable programs.

A key thrust of the Ministry’s response is that they are simply the funders of the K-12 system, with School Districts deciding how that funding gets spent, and that, therefore, it’s up to parents (and other stakeholders) to tell School Districts to continue supporting the programs that are important to us and our kids.
In view of this, next steps for the RMPA will include writing to School District 61 to ask what their process is for getting parents’ input on spending decisions.
If the School District has a process for engaging parents in planning and budgetary decisions, we want to be part of it, so that we can champion music, fine arts and other out-of-timetable programs.
The RMPA will keep this issue at the forefront of our activities and will update parents on all developments as they happen.
