Good evening Reynolds Band families,
I hope this finds you all doing well. I miss making music with my students and miss our music program community so… let’s bring it back. 🙂
With the success of our recent Grad Band and Grad Choir rehearsals and recording session this morning I would like to update you on a “return to music” plan for Reynolds. Thank you to Mr. Aerts, Mr. Norris and Mrs. Campbell for being so supportive of this plan. While it is not perfect, it will hopefully provide families with some connection, continuity, and closure for this year.
1.) Blue Band Rehearsal THIS Thursday, June 11th
With the support of our school administration, I am planning an outdoor, socially-distanced Blue Band rehearsal on the afternoon of Thursday, June 11th from 1pm – 2:45pm on the Reynolds basketball court and soccer field or parking lot (dependant on numbers) If numbers and spacing work out we may be able to use the school gym.
PLEASE NOTE: This is a completely OPTIONAL offering. Please discuss as a family if this rehearsal is appropriate for you/your student. Choosing not to participate will NOT affect your mark or grade in any way.
This IS an opportunity to reconnect SAFELY and do what we do best in the Reynolds Band – make music as a community.
I ask that members of the school’s Senior Concert Band (Grade 11s, 12s, and invited 9s and 10s) fill out the Google form survey by noon on Wednesday. Your answers will “drive the bus” in terms of rehearsal location, set-up, and tear down.

2.) Blue Band Rehearsal Zoom Q&A TOMORROW – Tuesday, June 9th
I have scheduled a Zoom Question and Answer meeting for students TOMORROW June 9th at 3pm (sorry for short notice!).
Zoom Meeting: Blue Band Rehearsal Q&A for Students
Time: Jun 9, 2020 03:00 PM Pacific Time (US and Canada)
Join Zoom Meeting
Meeting ID: 975 0900 9217 / Password: BlueBand20
2.) Band 9, Band 10, Drumline, Marching Band
For those NOT in Blue Band – Thursday’s rehearsal will serve as a test run for other school ensembles that will run in a similar fashion during the week of June 15 through to June 20.
I invite you to read through the survey information (click here to link to the PDF) form to this email as a similar survey will be sent to junior students and their parents after Thursday’s rehearsal.
Ms. Kerr and I have put together a tentative schedule that allows for Vocal Jazz to rehearse and record as well! In terms of bands, the plan is to offer rehearsal sessions for Band 9, Band 10, Drumline and, yes… Marching Band (more info below). This is dependent on our master plan working with exam schedules, course completion timings, student numbers, instrumentation, alignment of the planets, etc. etc.
I have decided not to offer sessions for the three jazz bands nor for the full Green Band due to time constraints, and the fact that one of those bands miiiiiiiight be overly large. :).
Thank you for your patience. More scheduling information to come soon.
3.) Year End: A Canada Day Parade & An Online Music Department Concert – Wednesday, July 1st
Mark your calendars for July 1st for two very special events:
Event #1 – July 1st, 9:00am – The Reynolds Secondary School CANADA DAY PARADE @ 9:00am – The Reynolds Marching Band (socially-distanced and double-spaced WITH colour party and drumline) WILL march on Canada Day – Wednesday, July 1st at 9am. Starting on the Reynolds field, we will perform for parents and for 3 invited parade “guest judges” (Mr. Dale Wilson, Bobbi Renton, and Marilyn Miller). Following that (and with the approval of the Municipality of Saanich) we will march through our school neighbourhood celebrating our students and our community.
Stay tuned for more information/rehearsal information and GO PRACTICE INVERCARGILL!
Event #2 – July 1st, 7:00pm – The Reynolds Music Department ONLINE YEAR END CONCERT – Featuring pre-recorded performances (NO. NOT WINTER FROLIC.), slide-shows, grad recognition, and awards will happen on Wednesday July 1st at 7:00pm on YouTube. Our goal is to include as many “normal” elements of our year end concerts as possible. Hosted live by myself and Ms. Kerr.

3.) But what about Requirements, Uniforms Returns, the 2 left band shoes that I have in my closet, and the fact that I haven’t touched my instrument in 16 weeks…
Everything will be fine. Please trust me.
Your marks are fine. I will be in touch tomorrow regarding requirements.
Your year end grades will be fine.
Requirements, uniforms, etc. will all be fine.
This is not the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
This is not the United States Navy Band.
This is the Reynolds Music Program. The goal of our program is to enrich students’ lives through music and community.
You are missed… a LOT.
Thank you for reading and for you care and kindness during these strange days.
