Updates: Sr. Tour Reminders, Marching Band, Blue Band/Drumline Performance, Opportunities

Hi All!

Some additional updates for you!

1.) Senior Tour Updates & Reminders:

Tour Band rehearses on Wednesday and Thursday at lunch. We will also rehearse on Friday during B-Block. Students who are not going on tour must still attend class. It is not an English day. PLEASE PRACTICE during the first week of Spring Break to keep your chops in shape for the start of tour.

Please turn in any outstanding final payments, passport copies, and copies of your travel insurance.

UNIFORMS: As mentioned in the meeting a few weeks ago please bring in your full uniform (including shoes) for inspection on Tuesday March 12th (anytime is fine) in a garment bag with your name on it. If you don’t have a garment bag borrow one from the band! 🙂

LOADING CREW: meets on Friday afternoon to pack percussion, trap cases, gear, and supplies.

2.) Marching Band Start-up: Friday

For 52 years, the Reynolds Marching Band has been a fixture in the Saanich and Victoria community. Our first rehearsal will be on Friday morning at 7:15am (location TBA). Please arrive early to find your spot in the band and to meet your “centre markers” (grade 11 and 12 student leaders). Colour Party members will report to our Colour Party captains in the uniform room for a flag and harness. We will ALL start with some basic marching technique, review whistle signals/verbal commands, and get to moving and (hopefully) playing “Salute to The Colors” before the end of the rehearsal.

FOOTWEAR: Bring a change of shoes/socks or GUMBOOTS if we DO go out onto the field.

GRADE 9 FAMILIES: I ask that all Grade 9 students attend THREE practices before opting out of the band. All I ask is that you try! Senior students will help you!

GRADING/CREDITS: Students will receive a mark (and 4 credits) for marching based on participation in rehearsals and all performances/parades.

PERFORMANCES: Victoria Day Parade (Mon. May 20), Multiple Sclerosis Walk (Sun. May 26), Oak Bay Tea Party Parade (Sat. June 1) Optional: Whistler Canada Day Parade Band Trip (Sun. June 30 – Tue. July 2).

3.) Upcoming Performances & Performance Opportunities:

We have some optional performance and learning opportunities coming up as well as a performance for the Blue Band and Drumline. Have a look below!

Marching Band “Appearance” at The Ocean 98.5 – Tuesday, March 19

(Time TBA. Between 7am and 10am)

This is OPTIONAL PERFORMANCE for Grade 10, 11, and 12 students who have experience marching. Please note: this is during Spring Break. 🙂 The Marching Band (without colour party this time) has been invited to march and play through the halls of The Ocean radio station to celebrate a long-standing staff-member’s birthday. The plan is to arrive, warm-up and tune, march through the halls playing “Salute To The Colors” and then play “Happy Birthday.”  If interested, please sign up on the door in the band room or email me. Should we have a workable ensemble by the end of the week we will go! You will need to take your instrument home on Friday afternoon and you will need your FULL UNIFORM for this performance.

Reynolds Staff vs Student Hockey Game at Pearkes Arena – Friday, April 5th (2:15pm)

This is OPTIONAL PERFORMANCE for any Grade 9 – 12 students. The annual staff versus students hockey game is happening at Pearkes Arena (Green Rink) on April 5th. We will, again provide a concert band to play O’Canada (and maybe a few pep band charts.. we’ll see!) at the start of the game. All grades are welcome to participate. No limit on instrumentation. Please sign up on the band room door or email me. We will have a quick rehearsal on April 5th at Lunch in the band room. Students will need to organize their own rides, carpool, or take public transit (Bus #26) to get to Pearkes Arena (by Tillicum Mall).

BC Provincial Honour Ensemble Auditions/Applications – DUE Friday, April 12th

Hundred’s of students audition annually from across British Columbia for positions in one of five provincial honour ensembles – Choir, Jazz Band, Vocal Jazz, String Orchestra, and Wind Ensemble. These ensembles feature guest conductors from around the world providing rich and rewarding musical experiences for all those involved. I highly encourage EVERYONE to have a look at the audition materials that are posted. Let me or Ms. Kerr know if you have questions or need help!

More information, audition materials, and application information can be found here: http://bcmusiced.ca/ensembles/

Blue Band & Drumline Perform at Lakehill Little League Opening Ceremonies (Ambassador Park) – Saturday, April 13th

Our Senior Concert Band and Drumline return to Lake Hill Little League to perform for the Lakehill Little League Opening! This is a wonderful community event that the Reynolds Band has supported for decades. Unfortunately, this does conflict with our Manure Sale Fundraiser happening on the same morning. Senior Band members will be given priority for afternoon shift sign up for the fundraiser.

How can you help? A student loading crew is needed. Please sign up on the door in the band room or email me. Parents! We are in need of 3-4 trucks to help move gear from Reynolds to Ambassador Park. Please advise by email if able to help! Thanks!

CREW CALL TIME is 9:25am in the Band Room. BLUE BAND & DRUMLINE CALL TIME is 10:15am at Ambassador Park. This is a FULL UNIFORM and “rain or shine” show!

*Please read the RUNNING ORDER for more information*
